STAND GROUND
STAND GROUND features an all-female cast of veteran and non-veteran women warriors sharing their own stories of life on the front lines: in war, daily civilian life, in the workplace, the family; against sexism, racism, and for everyday survival. This is a deeply personal journey through the complexities of war, and being a woman in leadership.
Telling the stories often untold, we uncover the courageous and daily acts of these women as they have served on the front lines at home and abroad. We see through their eyes, as we open our own. In both everyday life and military life, women put their lives, bodies and hearts on the line. We are here to celebrate their courage, their service, and the dire need for strong female leadership in this world.
In this audience-interactive experience, female warriors lead us through a series of intimate moments constructed from the depths of their most personal experiences. Winding our way through hidden passageways and unseen territory, we explore the intricate experiences of women who serve. From the daily realities of the city, to life on the battleship, what do we have in common? Who do we fight? How do we keep ourselves safe? Why do we need to?
Unfortunately, for many veterans the return home is the beginning of another long journey that often involves a struggle for support while dealing with the effects of PTSD, Moral Injury, and other remnants of war. Women veterans are especially impacted by struggles with PTSD and Moral Injury. They are twice as likely to experience depression as their male counterparts, and less likely to seek support services. They are 3-4 times more likely to experience homelessness than non-veteran women. 1 in 4 women report experiencing Military Sexual Trauma (MST). As we connect to the broader female experience and the many kinds of wars women face, we note that in the U.S. 1 in 6 women face sexual trauma, and 1 in 3 women worldwide experience some form of sexual violence. These statistics make it even more essential that we support our women in sharing their experiences, telling their stories, and becoming healers and guides for our communities.
STAND GROUND exposes the courage and strength of our female warriors both at home and abroad investigating the experience of WOMAN AS WARRIOR. Often under-celebrated or even exploited by societal infrastructures, we bring specific focus and attention to the challenges that female veterans face during and after military life.
